EDGEucation -- Democratizing Cloudflare Enterprise Edge For Small Business
  • 3 min read

As part of our EDGEucation Series, we’re leading the discussion around Edge Computing. We’re passionate about educating entrepreneurs on our implementation of Cloudflare Enterprise and how it benefits businesses like yours.

Because of our mission to help small businesses, we built our platform from the start with an Edge-first mentality. We’ve been honing the most robust and flexible integration with Cloudflare Enterprise including full-page and smart caching. But let’s not get too far ahead of the story. Let’s talk about Juan and his weekend project.

“While some data is best processed by a central cloud data center, users experience faster speeds in an edge computing model when the data doesn’t have to travel as far. By not sending all data back to a central location, bandwidth requirements and costs are reduced.”

What is Edge Computing and Why Does it Matter?

So Juan is working on the weekend restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang. He wants to replace the 289 with a 302 and needs some original parts. He found a sweet 302 at the junkyard, but it had some after-factory parts and that just takes all of the fun of restoring a classic car.

So, he’s in his driveway Googling “302 parts list.” He found a forum with every Bob, Dick, and Harry’s opinion, but the site is loading so dang slow, he’s frustrated. Too bad for MotorTrend (no offense). The local car club has a list of 302 parts with links to suppliers. Now Juan is a happy guy – until he sees the price – but that’s the cost of a passion project, right?

Edge computing matters to your business when you want to reach your customers – regardless of where they’re located. In this case, Edge computing matters if you want to beat out the competition to sell Juan your original 302 parts.

Juan doesn’t care how the website is built, which eCommerce platform they use, who their Managed Host is, or where the servers are located. He just needs the lifters, pistons, and rod bearings he can’t find anywhere else. And he’s searching on his 5G mobile device – a use case most website owners forget. Not everyone is on WiFi when they’re searching for information.

“At its most basic level, edge computing brings computation and data storage closer to the devices where it’s being gathered, rather than relying on a central location that can be thousands of miles away.”

Why is Edge Computing Beneficial to Local Businesses?

Edge computing is just like real estate. What’s their mantra? “Location, location, location.” So a local business might not think that Edge computing is important. But where are your customers while they’re searching? They could be doing research for a friend, looking for a local florist to deliver flowers to a funeral (it happens a lot), or searching while traveling for work. Location matters when it comes to the user’s experience – and that makes all the difference in the world to your bottom line.

It’s easy to think that as a small business, you don’t need enterprise-level tools. But why shouldn’t you experience the best and, more importantly, deliver the best experience to your customers? This is part of our core mission at Rocket. Just as WordPress has democratized publishing, GiveWP democratized donations, we’re democratizing the Edge.

That is, every single business, every single website owner, deserves the speed, performance, and security that Edge computing delivers.

Our Rocket Platform includes Cloudflare Enterprise on every single plan. That’s truly democratizing the Edge!
